Analysis: "We Need To Talk About Kevin"

We Need To Talk About Kevin is a 2011 drama with elements of horror and thriller, directed by Lynne Ramsay. It tells the story of a mother's psychological struggle following a massacre committed by her son. Though I have not watched the entire film, Debbie showed me a scene in which Eva enters a surreal, dream-like state. I can draw inspiration from this scene in order to more creatively represent the dream sequence in my own film.

Ramsay experiments with colour to convey a sense of surrealism; specifically, by incorporating small elements of red into a largely monochromatic palette. This reflects the previous scene in which there is a massacre-like dream involving tomatoes, which naturally featured a heavily red palette. I could experiment with this in my own film, perhaps using a largely limited palette of pink and white to represent a surreal environment.

The shot of a veil blowing in the breeze is used to convey a detachment from reality

Another way in which Ramsay communicates a sense of surrealism and dreaminess is through the motif of a veil blowing in the wind. This is a powerful shot that I feel is used effectively to create a the dreamy environment I wish to capture in Libby's conversation with grandma. It is also one that I anticipate could be replicated quite easily, with some gauze material and correct lighting. I will experiment with this on the day of the shoot.

All in all, I feel that We Need To Talk About Kevin could prove useful in helping me come up with ways to creatively portray a dreamlike and surreal state.
